Why We Started FRAU

Professional responsibility should not be carried alone.

When people ask why the Fire Risk Assessors Union was created, the honest answer isn’t dramatic.

It’s simple.

It started with a feeling many assessors will recognise… feeling alone.

The Quiet Weight of the Role

Fire risk assessors carry a level of responsibility that isn’t always visible from the outside.

We walk into buildings that are someone’s home.

We make professional judgements that influence life safety.

We sign our names to reports that matter.

Training gives you the framework.
Experience builds your confidence.

But there are moments, especially early in your career, where you pause and think:

“Is this right?”
“Have I interpreted this correctly?”
“Would someone more experienced see this differently?”

Each building is different. Even when layouts look familiar, the people inside change everything. You can have a well designed building that’s poorly managed. Or an imperfect building that’s being run responsibly.

The decisions aren’t always black and white, there are grey areas.

And sometimes, you simply wish you could pick up the phone and ask someone you trust.

The Reality of Working Independently

For many assessors, especially those working independently or within small practices, that trusted voice isn’t always there.

Even within larger companies, you may only have access to the experience inside that organisation. The wider industry knowledge, the different perspectives, the “I’ve seen that before” conversations, can feel out of reach.

Fire risk assessment is built on professional judgement. And professional judgement grows when it’s shared, challenged and discussed.

FRAU was created to make that discussion easier.

Not to replace competence.
Not to dilute responsibility.
But to support it.

Safety Before Metrics

Another reality assessors sometimes face is pressure, time pressure, commercial pressure, performance pressure.

But fire risk assessment should never be driven by targets or KPIs.

It should be driven by one thing:

Life safety.

FRAU believes assessors should feel supported in standing by their professional opinion, confident that safety comes first.

A collective voice helps strengthen that confidence.

Collaboration Over Competition

No single assessor has every answer.

The best outcomes happen when experience is shared:

  • When legal insight meets site experience
  • When enforcement knowledge informs reporting
  • When engineers and assessors talk openly
  • When newer professionals can ask questions without hesitation

The legislation itself encourages collaboration, yet the industry can sometimes feel fragmented.

FRAU exists to help bring those conversations together.

Over time, that will mean:

  • Regional support networks
  • Shared experience across disciplines
  • Events where professionals can meet and learn from one another
  • A stronger, collective voice when engaging with policymakers

But at its heart, it’s about something much simpler…

Not Feeling Alone in a Responsible Role

If you’ve ever stood on a roof exit route questioning whether what you’re seeing is acceptable…

If you’ve ever wished you could sense check something unusual…

If you’ve ever felt the weight of signing off a report and wanted reassurance that your judgement was sound…

Then you understand why FRAU exists.

It’s about community

It’s about professional support

It’s about strengthening standards through conversation

And most importantly, it’s about protecting life safety, together

FRAU is just beginning

But the need for connection, shared experience and collective support in this profession is already clear.

If you believe fire risk assessment is stronger when professionals support one another, we’d love you to be part of that conversation.

Join FRAU. Connect. Contribute. Strengthen the profession.
